Washington
The Washington Huskies did not play an inspiring game but they got the win they came for at Washington State last weekend. With California losing at Colorado this team now controls its own destiny as it finishes the season with dates against USC and UCLA. A road trip that is about as easy as it has been in the last 20 years right now.
For a team that disappointed multipe times winning the PAC 12 regular season championship would be a good way to finish.
They may have gotten the win but coach Lorenzo Romar has to be concerned about the game that Terrence Ross had last weekend. It is getting close to single elimination time and Ross fouled out with just two points against the Cougars. Tony Wroten stepped up with 21 big points in a low scoring affair and C.J. Wilcox chipped in 16.
Together they scored more than half’ the team’s 59 points. Playing USC is not the ideal situation to get the offense going unfortunately.
USC
USC is a football school but still this has been a painful hoops season. They have just a single win in PAC 12 play and are currently riding a 7 game losing streak.
Part of their challenge is depth but there are also no O.J. Mayo’s or Harold Miner’s on the roster.
I am sure coach Kevin O’Neill would even settle for a Jeff Trepagnier or anyone else who could put the ball in the basket.
USC gives up only 59 points per game…but they score a minuscule 53 points per game. The amazing thing is not that they are losing but that they haven’t just given up all together because the brand of basketball they play just isn’t what most kids are thinking about when they sign up.
One promising development of late has been the play of freshman guard Byron Wesley. He has had 7 double digit scoring games in a row including a career high 22 in their last game against Arizona State.
He is going to have his hand full Thursday night guarding the Huskies multitude of perimeter scorers.
