Matchup | Game Day Preview

March Madness isn’t the only hoops action going on now as the NIT is going down at Madison Square Garden and Washington is the top seed after missing out on the NCAA Tournament despite winning the Pac-12 regular-season title.

They’ll face Northwestern on Friday in the second round.

The Wildcats of the Big Ten did just enough to edge Akron 76-74 in the first round, and some sportsbook.com reviews would point towards poor shooting percentages as Northwestern hit 37% of their field-goal attempts, while Akron was at 31.6%.

Drew Crawford had a huge game with 27 points and seven rebounds, while John Shurna was fantastic with 23 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Wildcats, who also forced 12 turnovers while committing six, and smart players that work with bookie software know that the turnover battle is massive at this time of year.

The Wildcats did everything they could to make the NCAA Tournament, but the program just isn’t there yet. However, a solid performance in the NIT can’t hurt their recruiting, so they have to put any disappointment aside now.

The Huskies have even more reason to be disappointed as they’re the first conference regular-season champs in recent memory to miss out on the dance, and they would have been a fun pick for anyone betting March Madness spreads.

Terrence Ross, Washington Huskies

Game 1 was a 82-72 win over UT-Arlington, led by 23 points from Ross

However, they’re in the NIT and they opened the tournament with an 82-72 win over UT-Arlington, led by 23 points from Terrence Ross, while C.J. Wilcox added 15 points for the Huskies, who shot a blistering 57.4% from the field, which helped them overcome a 14-3 deficit on the offensive glass.

Of course, it’s tough to get offensive boards when you’re hitting most of your shots, and that’s a trade that the Huskies will take every time.

Washington is a 5.5-point favorite in this postseason clash, and this is the first time that these two have met, so there is a certain mystery on both sides.

The Huskies are playing with a chip on their shoulder and they could have given any NCAA Tournament team a run for their money with an explosive offense, and it’ll take their best defensive performance of the season for the Wildcats to slow down Washington.

They also have to get on the boards because Washington, despite being outrebounded in their first NIT game, is strong on the glass and after their performance against UT-Arlington, they’re going to swarm to every loose ball.
